This is helping to fund their teacher effectivenes programs, and thus provides much of the matching they need to unlock the money they got from the Gates Foundation.

I look forward to seeing how the Elementary schools score in two years, middle schools in 5 or so and high schools in 7. I don't think all these reforms, the Promise, etc... are going to make a noticeable difference at the high school level for some years, as the most important student-shaping work takes place at earlier ages. This is all very exciting stuff, though.

Yeah, it will probably take a while for all this to filter through the entire system. And some of this is admittedly somewhat experimental--the Gates Foundation identified promising programs in a few cities, and the idea is to see what works and then try to promote adoption of those ideas, maybe in a modified form, more broadly. But it is nice having Pittsburgh on the cutting edge.
