Is PNC a decent bank?

We have Wachovia which was recently taken over by Wells Fargo. There are NO branches in the area of either bank. We are looking for a banl not for main money deposit but a bank to allot money to every paycheck to have something local.

I used to work for PNC - business not branch. They are a solid enough outfit. However, I wouldn't use them for secondary banking - small amount of money and not a lot of transactions. They redo their fee schedules a lot. For secondary banking I'd just find whatever is close and has no fee checking so you don't have to worry about your balance or number of transactions.

Thank toosie!

Basically we are wanting to find a local bank to put money into as a savings? So that we have money here and a bank here that we can deal with instead of over the phone.

Try Citizens or Dollar Bank. My friends and I use those two and don't have any complaints with them.

Credit unions might be an option. I'm not in Pittsburgh, but the CUs here have fewer / lower fees than banks.

Dollar Bank is a great local institution, as is NorthWest Savings Bank. Screw the big boys.

PNC does have a lot of locations, especially since they took over National City. Their online pay system is pretty robust. They offer free checking. Not much to complain about PNC consumer banking.

I went into PNC and the guy told me about all kinds of stipulations.. you have to make XX amount of transactions a month on your check card, etc. I asked for a paper document listing all of these stipulations, minimums, fees, etc. and he said I could not have it until I signed up for an account.. what??? So, he let me walk out of the door.

If you are worried about surcharges at ATMs, you can find a member bank of the ATM Freedom Alliance.. Freedom ATM Alliance. Dollar Bank, Northwest, First Commonwealth are all members.. You can go to any of their ATMs and not have to pay a fee, so you have almost as many options as PNC. Also, many are members of the Allpoint system as well.
