I happened to be home the other day when the tax assessor drove up to look over my property. He measured the outside dimensions of the house, asked a few questions and looked over the property. He was checking to see if the information the county had on record was correct.

It wasn't.

I had him correct the information which should keep my taxes right where they are now. Here are a few things to know.

Check the county records for your home to see what is on record. Here is a link: Allegheny County Assessment

If it is not, you want to make sure you get it corrected asap. Measure the outside dimensions of your home and make sure they match. Look at the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Also look at the condition of the house.

I was told that letters will be sent out in 2011 with the new assessment value of your house. This new assessment will take effect in 2012.

Some people will not be happy in 2011 with the new assessment amounts. I hope you are not one of them.

Don't bet on it. My guess is your house is under assessed, I know mine is, as are most in the County. Now that Dan Dan the Tax Man is not in Harrisburg, I don't think he'll have any problem raising assessments.

The county has me down as no fireplace or garage, must have been the Wal-Mart reject they sent to check out my house.

I would have told the tax assessor to get off my property.

Not wise, they are allowed to do so.

And there's no sense being rude to these people. They're just trying to earn a living, just like anybody else.

I know some people who just re did their kitchen and were reassessed at 1/5 of what it was before. It makes no sense. But if they are going to let you pay less taxes that sounds fine to me!

I get the idea that sooner or later we will all be right where they want us with taxes. While I may escape a huge increase this time, I'll either get to higher taxes through the yearly creep or in one big blast in a few years.
