I have also heard good things about the Penn-Trafford school district, which I think is within a reasonable commute of Monroeville.

If you can afford to stay in Squirrel Hill, and your niece is going to be with you through H.S., well, I think it'd be better to go to Allderdice than Monroeville High. Not that I know anything about Monroeville, but Allderdice is one of the best high schools in the city.

Mapped it and it is Scientist Mom. Thank you for the recommendation. I'm noticing that it's around the Jeannette area so is that a good place to live?

Jeannette and Penn-Trafford are worlds apart. PT is a great school district in a quiet community. Jeannette is not so great (except for football), in a declining community. I would rank:
PT
Franklin Regional (close to PT)
Plum
.
.
.
Gateway
.
.
Jeannette
.
.
.
.
.
.
Penn Hills

Living in the Penn-Trafford would be a no brainer when commuting from home to the Hospital, plus the taxes are lower in Westmoreland County.

Well what about the Franklin Regional District? Someone suggested it and Murrysville looks like a good area.

Being able to afford the areas will not be an issue when she comes here. I'll have graduated by that point.

I'm not to far from Allderdice and it does look nice from the outside, but what about middle schools. I'm assuming Allderdice starts with at least grade 8 if not 9. She'll be starting 6th grade when she gets here.

My friend works with children in the city school system and I hear horror stories about the city schools. Quite honestly, I want to avoid the city schools. Plus I'm tired of paying my paychecks to the city of Pittsburgh.

Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional are both great. Murrysville is great. Penn Township is great. You will not find much of a problem there if you like rural areas. I'm a PT grad so I'm biased, but between it and Franklin it is probably "6 of one, half dozen of the other".

I do not mind the rural. Pittsburgh is just a trip down the Parkway if we ever want to come into the city. I will definitely keep an eye on both areas.

Now if I go with Murrysville, does anyone know of activities for kids? She's playing soccer now, but she's also involved with Dance and Karate. Are there places in Murrysville that offer dance and karate? Also are there any club soccer teams around too?

Personally, I would stay in Squirrel Hill. Much nicer IMHO.
