Born & raised in Wisconsin, lived in IL (2 cities), IA (3 towns), & Omaha, Nebraska. ...might be another pit stop I forgot.

I have never lived in the EST before moving here. I am so shallow my biggest complaint I miss watching late night TV! Pittsburgh is very midwestish.

Wow. Great thread so far everyone. Thanks everyone for your contributions, and thanks, Yac, for adding the "native" poll option, too. We're a pretty diverse bunch. I'm surprised there's no votes yet for California since I see so many CA license plates on the roadways here. I'm also surprised to see nobody else voted "Elsewhere in PA" since most people I've met here who aren't natives moved here from places like Warren, St. Mary's, State College, Philadelphia, and other parts of our beautiful Commonwealth of PA.

Originally from upstate NY but spent my formative years in Central PA. Been in Pittsburgh since I came out here for undergrad in the mid-90s.

Congratulations on your impending residency, Cozmosis, and welcome in advance to Pittsburgh! I moved here from the DC area and still have friends in the Baltimore area (Savage, to be exact, as well as Owings Mills). You'll be surprised how many other Baltimore/DC transplants there are here. Since you're moving to Highland Park you'll have to try Park Brugge for dinner at some point.

Yes! We have our first "Elsewhere in PA" selection! I've met quite a few people here from Central PA. I haven't met any others, though, from my native Northeastern PA. In that area Pittsburgh seemed like a different state to most people, and many never visited here before.

I have a "love/hate" relationship with the "yinzer" crowd, actually. On the one hand some of us worry that people will think we're ignorant or backwater by saying things like "Yinz all goin Dahntahn after goin ta da Gian' Iggle?" On the other hand I worry that as these "yinzers" die off Pittsburgh will lose a precious part of its individualized identity with that distinguishing dialect. I can't force myself to say "yinz" in casual conversation, but as the yinzers continue to die off I find myself now saying "Dahntahn" like a pro even though I've only lived here six months.
