Not a fan of Obama anymore, but I do like the fact that he has been to Pittsburgh so many times. He is visiting CMU's Robotics facility. CMU sure has been getting some nice publicity lately. Watson on Jeopardy and a few visits from Obama. I don't know if any president has visited Pittsburgh as often in recent years. I am sure many years ago they did, since Pittsburgh had the 2nd most corporate headquarters to NYC at one time.

Congrats to CMU for this positive publicity.

I love how Obama loves our area, and as a husband of a CMU employee, I am very proud.

Does he love our area, or does he simply realize that philly is in the bag and he needs western pa votes to take the state in 2012? Remember, this is a "man" that claimed we are all racist, bitter, bible thumpers that cling to our guns and religion since we can't find any jobs here. If you think his visits are anything beyond political pandering, then you're as gullible as his supporters that claim he is a genus and the economy is soaring. Boy Mayor would have done better as president than Obama.

I'd expect a lot more visits. Pennsylvania is likely to be a important state in the 2012 presidential election (probably not the precise state that puts the winner over the top, but one Obama will likely have to win here to win the election), and Western PA is really the key swing region.

It is no doubt a political move, but that is okay. He has done a lot for our area. We are on the radar of him and I will take it. So far all the publicity has been very good.

As far as him saying, "clinging to our guns" kind of mentality. He was just telling the truth, which is pretty rare from a president.

I don't want this to turn into a "how good is Obama doing thread". That wasn't the point. It is the effect on Pittsburgh. The effect is GOOD and it is good for CMU to get robotics recognition, which is in turn good for Pittsburgh. I love it.

No more comments on Obama's job. How about what the visit means to Pittsburgh.

I'd guess both. Obviously I agree about the political motives, but as campaign spots go, Pittsburgh is nice and close to DC, and there is fun stuff to do here.

I also think there is a third factor. Pittsburgh has become a sort of poster-child for the possibility of recovery from a severe economic crisis, a fact which Obama used when he located the G20 here. I suspect he will continue to make use of that branding in some way during the campaign.

Assuming I am right about how Obama intends to use Pittsburgh's new branding, it certainly can't hurt. Basically, it would be free advertising for the region, just like during the G20.

1. Pittsburgh is trendy right now, and popular especially with college students and 20-somethings. Anyone who wants to be seen as part of the pulse of what's new will want to plug into the urban chic vibe that Pittsburgh has right now.

2. Pittsburgh is also seen as the home of the average American, not to mention the struggling working class. Oh, and seniors, too. He gets to appeal to a lot of voters by visiting the area.

3. Pittsburgh has growth, and is rebounding better than a lot of other areas.

4. Pittsburgh seems worlds apart from DC... but is also a short distance. It's just a quick hop away, which can be handy.

I don't know if this visit will bring that much national attention to Pittsburgh, but it can't hurt. When politicians visit different cities every week, you quickly forget which city was visited the week before.

And as you can see from our discussions, depending on what they want to see people can envision Pittsburgh as an East Coast city, a Midwest city, an Appalachian city, a Rust Belt/working class city, a high tech and education city, etc. That's a one-stop-shopping of demographics.
