Hi everyone, wondering about possible neighborhoods that would fit me.

What I absolutely need in an apartment is affordability (ideally no more than $800?) and access to decent public transportation as I don't drive.

What I'd also like if possible is proximity to a supermarket...also other stores, possibly for lower-end employment. If there's any arty stuff and good dive bars that would be a plus too.

I guess I should also add that I dont want to live in a total crime-infested spot haha

Annny help or ideas would really be appreciated.

Off the top of my head, within the City I'd say Central Northside, Deutchtown, Lawrenceville, maybe Bloomfield

I was going to suggest Lawrenceville or even Dormont if you're not opposed to being right outside the city.

I'd start with the string of Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Friendship, and East Liberty.

Bloomfield might be my first choice and then Lawrenceville. If you ride a bike to grocery, Morningside, Stanton Heights and Highland Park might work.

Brian suggested Friendship and that is a possibility. East Liberty still has quite a bit of crime, but it is trying to move in a better direction. I still consider it pretty iffy.

Why not the South Side?

Lots of apartments over there in the moderate price range as well as a large Giant Eagle and a sufficient number of bars to meet your drinking needs.

I didn't move my car for a month once during a particularly snowy winter, in fact a car is almost a liability over there if you don't have your own parking space.

You know, this might be the best selection! South Side has it all and no car needed. Plenty of bars in every price range. Great idea.

Yeah you pretty much described my old college haunt down by the "Dirty Bird" as they call it to a T. I had a huge 1BR (as far as 1BRs go) apartment for $450 and was always just a couple blocks from groceries and a bus stop. You can definitely find something decent down there for under $800. Gets a little crazy on weekend nights, but as far as having everything you need within walking distance you really can't beat it.

I'll second the suggestion for dormont... I'm moving from an urban neighborhood (mt washington) to Dormont (havent moved yet, but now own 2 houses ... trying to sell mine on the mount ) and I have to say...dormont is really convenient and walkable and has great access via the T (assuming you locate yourself in the right area of dormont...

now the taxes...thats another topic

Thanks for the replies.

Does South side have a huge college contingent? I don't really want to be around throngs of frat guys.

I tried googling, but couldnt find the light rail schedule. Does it run late nights?

I know I should visit and see all this for myself when Im able.
thanks again
