I wonder what that would do to the Farmers@Firehouse market in the lot between Bar Marco and Penn Fish Co.

I started to learn to cook courtesy of Live Fish. One of my college roommates' family owned it, and he would work there a couple of times a week, bringing home fish for me to cook.

The market needs a shot in the arm. It is nothing like westside market in Cleveland. Westside market is a destination. Maybe Pittsburgh will take pointers off of Cleveland, just like they did with the rapid bus system.

looks like they already did but it didn'thelp

As the group planned the market, Neighbors in the Strip toured public markets in Cincinnati, Columbus and specifically Cleveland's West Side Market, a 101-year-old gem in a historic building. Yet even with consulting from key players in these markets, it has not helped the group to better align its ambitions and resources.

thankfully mr peduto realizes there are plenty of places to glean inspiration that, gasp, aren't in Ohio

Mr. Peduto confirmed he wants to turn into something akin to Pike Place Market in Seattle
biscotti's idea is worth considering
Quote:
"We have a public market. It's the biggest public market in America, man, and it's called Penn Avenue," said Larry Lagattuta, owner of Enrico Biscotti. He had been on the board of Neighbors in the Strip but has since left because he did not agree with the direction of the public market.
He is an advocate of turning the produce terminal into a market for the hundreds of farmers within 150 miles of the city. "That's the only way Penn Avenue could get any better," he said.
it sounds like the future of the public market is probably at the produce terminal rather than its current location. you have to wonder how it would be faring if it were in the old allegheny market house or the still extant south side market..which is perfect for setting up complementary businesses such as restaurants, around it like plaza de mercado in san juan

a little sad history, many of the other famous markets have been in operation for a long, long time

Pittsburgh has a long history of devaluing its public markets. The Allegheny Market House on the North Side was destroyed in 1966 to make way for apartments and a mall. The 1893 South Side Market closed in 1943 and became the South Side Recreation Center. And the Diamond Market was razed in 1961 after operating in what's now Market Square since 1914.

Imagine what it would have been like, if, instead of fast food and the Y, the New Diamond Market/GCMurphy's building had become the Pittsburgh Public Market.
