Not a huge office, but Caterpillar is one of those brands which means something to people (sort of like Google in a very general sense).

Caterpillar is a god company. Hope it happens. It's great to read about things like this and even if it's just a foot in the door, a foot in the door is a very good thing with a company like Caterpillar.

Of course first we have to beat out those corn-crackers down in Louisville.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) is looking to locate an office with about 20 people and a payroll of $2.3 million. The company would invest $1.74 million in the 5,500-square-foot office with an average $75 hourly wage
Those are some high paying jobs! Especially when you consider that at least a few of those 20 people are going to be administrative support or tech support.

Don't forget that's an average wage. Technically you can have an average wage of $75/hr. if ten executive employees are making $140.00/hr. and ten administrative support/tech support mployees are making $10/hr.

Looking to the future I see. I bet they will do it. This I feel is a byproduct of Marcellus Shale. They need a place for in this region for personal service. Hope it goes through.

That's possibly one of the reasons. If true, then Pittsburgh should beat out Louisville. I have a hunch that it has more to do with Panama Canal upgrade.

I was considering exactly that. "average wage of $75/hour" really means nothing since we don't know if it is mean or median, and the jobs paying that much probably aren't hourly anyway. 20 people at $2.3 million is $115K/year mean salary. It's silly to think that there won't be at least a few people in that office making only $30 or $40K a year (or less). What I meant in my last post is that It's high paying jobs to start with, but when you consider that there are going to be a few people making relatively low pay, the other jobs jump even further beyond the $115K mean.

There's no way an office of people making six figures, even just 10 of them, isn't going to demand on site technical support, secretaries, and maybe even a personal assistant or two. It's definitely a good thing for Pittsburgh. It's not like Caterpillar is trying to ship off some low-rung department; these are obviously people that are high up in the company. It bodes well for future expansion if they do open the office here.
