Yeah, in another of the dumbest ranking surveys, Pittsburgh comes in as the "flirtiest" city in the nation. So, the next time you're at Sheetz and the employee that made your 2,000 calorie glob of chili and cheese nachos smiles at you, it may be more than just friendly service.

People are a little flirty here I notice from being out and about. I think it's more in good fun and being friendly though instead of being a "creeper". We are the 3rd most promiscuous city too though..........

OMGoodness. Read the article. It was a study done online evaluating how often 300k people throughout the nation use the smilies.

I'm familiar with that website - tagged.com.

Those winks are a way to get someone else's attention without having to write anything. You see a profile you like, and just give a wink.

What I don't understand is it was 2-month study, and they only got 64 virtual winks. I wonder how they setup their study.

You'd have to setup a dummy account of some very attractive fake profile photo, and just count who winks from where. But the logistics of doing that fairly seems nightmarish. If we could see the study, I'm sure there are a ton of flaws throughout.

Not saying that Pittsburghers may or may not be flirty, but a study based on tagged.com and winks, seems ripe with flaws in general.

Methodology might be flawed, but it certainly arrived at what seems to be a reasonable result. Of course, I don't really know how it compares to a ton of places, but it is different than some others I'm familiar with.

Now I'm a weirdo introvert in the first place, but still, the things people say here to total strangers, it IS more typical to see that here than other places. That's probably what I'm thinking of. Actual flirting is only a subset of that.

Maybe just the down-to-earth people.

In other parts of the U.S., there is so much paranoi about the next person. I think Hollywood movies and American TV doesn't help that, as they try to drive down this point that anyone anywhere can be a huge pyscho.

Since Pittsburgh seems to be so much off the radar with the rest of the country, it might retain more old-style feelings of general warmth and general goodwill to their fellow human beings. And in such an environment, a bit easier to flirt.

However, this seems to go against the other Pittsburgh mantra that everyone in Pittsburgh already has their own sets of friends they grew up with, and have no need or reason to meet anyone new?

I never thought that was entirely true. The first part is--a lot of people here are still friends with people they grew up with. The second part, about not being willing to make new friends, isn't really true in my experience.
