I am not a huge bagel fan, but I have to say, Panera and it pains me to say that because it is a chain!!! I usually don't care for chain food. Panera's bagels are really big and have a nice chewy texture. They don't skimp on anything. You get a sesame bagel, it is loaded. That cinnamon one is not a bagel anymore. That thing is a huge dessert, but it is really good.

I'm not a New Yorker, but I was spoiled for good bagels by growing up near this place in Cincinnati: Marx Hot Bagels - Cincinnati, OH I like bagels that are small, dense, and chewy with just a hint of crispness. Chain bagels are usually too big, doughy, and soft.

I don't care if they are a chain or not. Panera is good!

You can buy H and H New York bagels at Communtiy Market in Fox Chapel. They are large bagels in frozen section and are outstanding. They ship anywhere.

Giant Eagle store brand bagels are really, really big. a half dozen weigh 24 ounces.

But they are more of a roll than a bagel, don't have that crisp outer part that makes a bagel a bagel.

But they aren't a bad roll.

This is another good way to get good bagels. Homemade Bagels Are a Breeze! | Michael Ruhlman

I actually finally tried it recently, this is fairly easy and comes out pretty good even as a total neophyte to bread baking. (They might look a little wrinkled, or at least mine did but they taste good.)
