Here is an awesome little documentary on the Carnegie Library in Braddock, which was the first of its kind.

We Are All Workers: Episode 10 The Library - YouTube

This is a segment of a series of Braddock documentaries put together by Levi's. You can explore the other segments on Youtube as well. They are all wonderful and worth watching. I think what is said about Braddock also applies to Pittsburgh's other abandoned and distressed communities.

In this segment, a long-time resident explains why she thinks the majority of the population left Braddock -- not because of lack of jobs (because Braddock lost much of its population during its boom), but because when people made money, they wanted to live elsewhere (somewhere befitting their new status).

Excellent. Do you know where one could find Tony Buba's documentary, Lightning Over Braddock?

Finally had a chance to catch up on this. Intriguing documentary. Do you have any others? (And please oh please post anything you might have on Fairywood--yes, I still have quite the little crush on old Fairywood. Some day someone's gonna tell some interesting stories from that place, I just know it. )

That could be so interesting--hope you do it. Hey, you might even be able to publish it in a local magazine and get some $$ for it. (Well, maybe some pennies, anyway. )

That's a good idea. I'll probably just post it to my blog. I really have to thank city-data for helping me establish my blog. It's now listed on the first page of Google results and averaging about 75 hits per day.

Certainly shows the value of old money to keep a community going after its boom days. Guess not enough stayed.

woot woot! Thanks for posting so much interesting architecture and history. I always enjoy your posts. If I had any free time, and I don't right now, I'd prowl around these towns more before they fall or burn or are town down.

What's the link to your blog again? There are a bunch of sub-reddits that would groove on your type of pictures.
