Effort under way to restore, reopen Penn-McKee Hotel

The Penn-McKee is a vacant hotel in downtown McKeesport which may be restored in the near future.

Someone needs to poiint out to the Post-Gazette that the content of that article has nothing to do with the title. The article talks about plans for a "state historic marker to be erected outside the hotel, which now stands vacant." No mention of restoring or reopening this old hotel. I'm not familiar with the building, but if it is vacant, it looks like a waste of money to put a historical marker on it.

If you had read the article, you would have seen the paragraph that states there is a group which is working to get the renovation of the building started, and the historical marker was the first step to reach that goal.

I love historic preservation as much as the next angel, but I have to wonder why, in 2012, anyone would stay in a hotel in McKeesport.

My apologies alleghenyangel, I guess I thought something would be mentioned before the 12th and only paragraph that mentions something about renovation. I sure hope tax dollars aren't involved.

I tend to agree, I can't see much demand for the Mon valley area past Swissvale anytime in the foreseeable future. In fact, it could be awhile before demand reaches Swissvale (10-20 years).

Until somewhere around the the 1950's every town used to have hotels in their downtown. Greensburg, Homestead, Butler, Indiana, Connellsville, Uniontown, New Castle all had hotels. If you look closely, many of these building are still there. With the construction of the Interstate Highway system and the decline of the railroads, chains like Holiday Inn and Howard Johnsons started building motels outside of the downtown and neare highway interchanges. A hotel could not survive today in a downtown in a town the size of McKeesport, especially considering its economy and lack of business. There are a few hotels in smaller towns in PA. Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Harrisburg, Johnstown and State College all have downtown hotels.
