I just read on the Wilkinsburg Council Minutes that they are now considering demolishing the Penn Lincoln Hotel. Apparently the building is in a state of collapse and is too far gone to rehabilitate. It will cost over $500,000 to demolish it. There is talk about the borough owning the land and erecting a new office building on it.

The minutes are posted here:

What a shame.....The Penn Lincoln Hotel is a Landmark building for downtown Wilkinsburg.

It's too bad that it couldn't be saved, but I have to say, I always thought it was an ugly building.

This news is over a year old and was discussed here previously. The structure is a bit unusual and wasn't kept in repair. Their restaurant was shut down by one or various govt. agencies in 1971. In 1976 I worked across the street from the side entrance on Center Avenue. There wasn't much activity but a Delorean (?) stainless steel car with doors that flipped up, often parked on the street near that entrance. Too bad it couldn't be saved but they let it rot too long.

I'd rather keep looking at it as a ruin than a parking lot.

Sounds like they are still not quite sure how to handle it. I've been hoping a reuse would emerge, but so far no luck.

if borough council minutes are to be believed, it would take 14 million dollars to renovate that building. it's a shame, but that's a pretty hard sell.

In 15 years this could be another Highland Building-type project. That's why I would be sort of happy if nothing happened.

Default Keep the Penn Lincoln

I personally don't understand how and which properties are officially decided for demolition in Wilkinsburg, but I would rather see the Wilkinsburg council spend $500,000 tearing down SEVERAL HUNDRED non-historic, crappy, never built to be nice to begin with abandoned homes and businesses in Wilkinsburg instead of tearing down the Penn Lincoln.

Drive around the Hunter Park and East Hills areas and you'll know what I'm talking about. If they clear out all that blight, and clean up all the illegal dumping, Wilkinsburg will look A LOT better.

I agree that the Penn Lincoln was never a beautiful building to begin with, but it could serve so many purposes in the future as more investment occurs in Wilkinsburg. Unless built upon, a vacant lot won't serve Wilkinsburg any purpose.
