What's your opinion? This is the only Quad A school that will cut its Athletic Director's salary in half and have it as a part time position. This is also the ONLY African American Quad A Athletic Director. Coincident??? I'm on the fence.

Let me get this straight. The board also eliminated 27 teaching positions and they cut the athletic director's salary in half and he happens to be black, so they are throwing in the race card? Must be the 27 teachers were minorities as well right? Race? What about those teacher cuts? Goodness!

At first, I was thinking it's impossible because so many other positions and programs were cut. But the other positions cut were janitorial and clerical, except for teaching positions cut due to lower enrollement. So I was briefly on the fence too. Since I don't know enough about Athletic Director positions, I did a quick google search. It seems that for the last few years it has been a national trend to cut Atheltic Directors to part time or eliminate the positions entirely. I'm not on the fence anymore.

I think no one has any idea and it is absurd to have an opinion about something you know nothing about. Sometimes people play the race card unnecessarily. Other times people do racist things. My instincts tell me this isn't racially motivated, but what do I know? I wasn't there and I don't know the people involved. I have no evidence either way.

Some of us should work harder at avoiding the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Citing race is very typical, predictable, and ignorant.

I agree... Just like racism is typical, predictable, and ignorant. You have no idea what happened here. But apparently? you will believe what you want to believe without regard to facts, data, or knowledge of the situation.

I would wait until more information comes out before jumping to any conclusions.

I can definitely say that the article only paints one side of how people feel about Gateway AD Terri Smith. While he is well respected in some circles, he is also viewed by others in the community as highly opinionated, a seeker of interpersonal conflict, and a difficult person to work with.

Personally, my interactions with him have been fine but I just wanted to share some info and round out the conversation as the article only presented the perspectives of his supporters. I believe that these issues (much more so than race) may have also played a part in the position being reduced to PT.

What do you mean, "I know nothing about it"? I just read they are cutting the athletic director's salary in half and are ELIMINATING 27 teachers and the athletic director is saying "race" is playing a part in him having his salary cut in half. Seems I have enough information to have an opinion. If I was in power, I would tell the athletic director to no let the door hit you in the ... They are eliminating 27 teaching positions. Maybe they should eliminate the athletic director altogether.

Ugh, this stuff is what makes it harder for minorities to get hired for positions in the first place. Someone needs to tell this guy that his position ranks at the bottom of importance in an educational institution.
