All yinz are so unfair to Bloomfield! Even my mom thought it was cool...
Though she did point out that there was an AWFUL lot of litter on the streets. My thinking is that the narrow, narrow streets make it difficult for street-cleaning crews to get through, which contributes to the supposedly "run-down" character of the neighborhood. Also, when it gets windy, unprotected and overfilled dumpsters tend to shed trash rather than keep it contained. I saw it happening behind the Shur-Fine...papers blowing from the dumpsters and littering the streets.

Our family find that Mt. Lebanon, Penn Hills, and Forrest Hills are the most beautiful. These three communities all have similar homes most all brick and stone with slate and tile roofs built in the Tudor and colonial styles with a few awesome mid century modern homes mixed in. The homes are usually on huge oak tree lined streets with stone walls separating the homes. In all three communities there is a huge number of brick streets still in place giving the whole charm that last through the years.

Coming from Los Angeles, We are big fans of mid century modern architecture. And Pittsburgh is loaded with great mid century modern homes there is a great cluster of them near the intersection of Graham Boulevard and Old William Penn Highway, these homes are amazing with flat and a layered roofs, many windows, stacked stone and amazing style that is sure to last years to come. The resemble Frank L. wrights homes but still bring their own twist to the historic modern designs.

We would love for "Adventure Outdoors" to do a walking tour of these mid century modern ranch style homes some time ;-)

Interesting. I've never thought of Penn Hills or Forest Hills as anything but homely post-war suburbia. Can you post some Street View links of the houses that you're talking about? I can't find any examples near Graham and Wm. Penn.

Maybe not your cup of tea, Gene, but here's a late 1930s brick Tudor.
700 Cascade Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15221 - Zillow

Nearer to Graham, 2318 Marbury is nice if you like contemporaries.
2318 Marbury Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15221 is For Sale - Zillow

We were just on Cascade at a party today. It's a great street and a nice neighborhood.

Forest Hills and Churchill have some awesome 1920s-1930s era homes, if you like those styles.

The houses at the intersection of William Penn and Graham are very impressive (Churchill / Black Ridge area):

There are tons of beautiful homes along Route 30 in Forest Hills. http://goo.gl/maps/IoCES They are obscured by trees, and easier to see if you take a drive out that way.

The more urban part of Forest Hills looks like this: http://goo.gl/maps/OYwtT

Marbury is the best! My friends lived there for years. They baught the ugliest house on the block. The house was not as modern as the others but was no less stunning in appearance once remodeled. The Marbury St. Homes are between 2000 and 3000 sq ft. In the late 90s that was huge to me. My friends house was 120K back in 99. That is a lot of house for the money.
