Now I've lived in Oakland many years now, but this year alone there have been 3 armed robberies of college students, higher than I can ever remember. One was on Semple, one on York about a week ago, and now there was a third at the very busy corner of Coltart and Zumela (which is an area I walk through almost daily and mostly at night). Now I'm pretty tolerant of urban crime and don't pay much attention, but this sleuth of robberies has me on edge.

Thoughts on the subject?

Oakland has been a place you have to be careful for as long as I've been frequenting it. The armed robberies I started noticing in the mid nineties, I'm talking robberies of college students too. I think the robbers see these kids as easy targets, know they have ipods and other things of value and probably won't resist. It would be nice if the Pittsburgh Police out a beat cop on the streets between Forbes and Bates on weekend nights. Be careful.

The funny thing is the areas most people will tell you to be most careful of (South of the Blvd of the allies, Oak Cliffe, etc) haven't had any of these problems yet this year.

There's been vandalism and gang tagging issues in South Oakland approaching Frazier Street... Possible gang related graffiti that makes the news is a sign of what's next to come.

A lot of young undergrads living in the central portion of south Oakland.

Young naive people, new to the big city, some new to the country with a pocket full of student aid money--makes for easy pickings for the armed robbery crowd.

Generally speaking, armed robbery is one of the toughest rackets out there. But I can't think of an easier venue for strongarmed thieves to practice their craft than in the Halket/ Dawson/Bouquet St. Triangle and September has to be the high season for it.

Do any of you happen to know what the CHU tag represents? I've seen it popping up in Highland Park.

I see that on my bike ride and I figure it is Danny Chew or (Chu). He is the dude that started the dirty dozen. At least that is my view, which... well is a fun guess.
