Weisbrod said the closing of the rest of Parkway Center does not include the Giant Eagle grocery store which continues to operate with a recently extended five-year lease on the center’s northern flank.
Whew. I was worried about that.

Not a surprise. It's been on life support for years. I imagine they will replace it with some cheap low-rise buildings to mimic the Parkway Center office clump. The location is good, so theyll fnd tenants.

For a few years after it opened, though, it was a busy place with David Weis, K-Mart and Giant Eagles as anchors. I believe that after Weis left, Parx-more took over that location until they went bankrupt.

With Giant Eagle still there, how much redeveloping can they do? At the end of the article, the one quote says:

“I would think that most of it would have to be torn down and rebuilt in some fashion,” said Weisbrod.

They said that K-Mart continuing to renew it's lease prevented redevelopment since it needs to be torn down...ok, so what about Giant Eagle! I'm honestly surprised Giant Eagle is okay with being there especially since they're literally the lone wolf now. They're virtually hidden. If you don't know Giant Eagle is there...well, you don't know Giant Eagle is there. That store has never seemed busy to me. Not to mention, getting back to GE is hilarious with the condition of the parking lot.

I really hope they do something with that entire development. As everyone has said, it's in too good of location to just sit there and rot altogether.

Rental apartments are in short supply right now, as I understand it. Since the GE is there, and it's convenient to Lincoln Hwy, it could be converted into some nicely located apartments.

This has been a long time coming. The mall started to go downhill quickly once the Robinson/South Fayette commercial area boomed and offered a lot more stores than Parkway Center Mall ever could.

I didn't move here until 2000, after the PCM heyday, so for me Parkway Center was never in a competition with Robinson. It was merely the place closest to where I live where there was a grocery store, a Hallmark, a Radio Shack, Phar-Mor, K-Mart, etc. I never thought of it as a full-service suburban mall experience, merely a convenient strip mall.

isn't the whole thing basically falling into the earth anyway? how can they rebuild on that?

i remember working at parkway center 5-6 years ago and every time i'd think to go over to the mall, the store that i wanted to go to was gone. and you know your mall's in trouble when the flea market in it goes out of business.

You're right. It was never a destination regional mall. It served mostly the local area for a few miles around it. When I lived on the North Side, it was an easy drive for basics (after rush hour, anyway).

The best way to demolish Parkway Center Mall would be to place all the dynamite underground.
