Excellent piece. The buncher developmeny is too high profile and too large to be screwed up.

Last time I went down to the water by the strip district, some lady in full business attire was hitting golf balls into the river. I hadn't expected that.

What does this have to do with the development plan? Nothing, most likely. Ha.

That's a pretty misleading headline--Murphy was more suggesting the project could and should be improved in various ways, rather than opposing it. And from what I could tell, he was more suggesting additional public access to the river and park-like amenities, plus less surface parking, not a sweeping change in use from residential/office to retail/restaurants.

this is pretty damning stuff (absolute garbage development if its true)
Quote:
[LEFT]Given plans today, the setbacks from the rivers are stingy; there will be too much surface parking for what should be a very urban space; some of the residential buildings are envisioned with parking facing the river; and there will be no public feature running alongside the river other than an existing trail. Just as at the Technology Center, buildings will simply line up in a row, dully turning their backs to the river.

^ He also slams the Waterfront

Quote:
To find something that‘s much worse, though, you need only go a little further up the Mon to Homestead.

One part of the Waterfront development in Homestead features a pleasant village-like cluster of small-scale stores built around a pedestrian-friendly “town square.” But a five-lane access road between this town square and the Monongahela effectively isolates it from the river — despite a pedestrian bridge little used by shoppers. Worse, the rest of the Waterfront consists of an equally isolated and unwalkable nearly one-mile-long string of parking lots bordered by “big box” stores.

The river might as well not be there. Except for some of the townhouses, none of other restaurants and office buildings “front” on the river and the access road makes them nearly impossible to reach except by automobile. An attractive trail winds along the river in a very narrow space behind the buildings, but getting there is anything but easy, and you can count no fewer than 11 parking lots fronting the river and trail.
That place is so wrong.

Sounds like it isn't going to be very good with a bunch of parking lots and huge buildings not utilizing our wonderful Allegheny River. Ah well, maybe it will be better than the giant parking lot. Sad that Buncher sits on so much great property. They sure don't seem to have good vision at all.

This plan was approved yesterday by City Council without any changes. Dowd proposed amendments at the last minute that would have at least put standards and conditions on the development to make it match other city plans, but those failed. Harris, Burgess, Lavelle, Kail-Smith, and O'Connor are the council members who voted for it as well as against the amendments.

The Buncher Five...

I agree with h_curtis... this development is a piece of garbage.

The streets are still GATED... Buncher just has to allow pedestrians to walk along those gated streets.

"It is nothing more than a gated community in the Strip District." - Patrick Dowd

"This property does not belong to the city. This property belongs to the Buncher Co." - Darlene Harris

That quote from Darlene Harris burns my butt. I own my property in the city too, but I'm sure she wouldn't have the same attitude towards letting me do whatever the heck I want with it. What's the point of reviewing and voting on plans if that's your attitude?
