I could see Mad Mex not being your thing... but how is it 'gross'?

For me it's their nachos.

Churches around New Castle have sold pepperoni rolls and pizza green rolls (spinach rolls) since at least the 1960s, so I'm not so sure it originated in West Virginia. When I moved to Pittsburgh in 1986, the only version of a 'pepperoni roll' I could find was a kolache with pepperoni that some convenience stores sold. Kind of funny since it's hard to find kolaches anywhere around Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh region seems to be the only place that dumps fries on salads. I think this started at Quaker Steak & Lube in Sharon, then eventually it spread south. I don't remember any restaurants in Pittsburgh with fries on their salads in the late '80s, but now there's a ton of them.

Even McDonald's has a fish sandwich. That's not exactly a Pittsburgh thing. Maybe GIANT fish sandwich is.

Mad Mex is gross simply because their tortillas are horrid. They're easy to make. You can even buy a machine that does it. But Mad Mex buys these horrible thick, stale tortillas from Sysco or whatever.

Wait -- you forgot the Velveeta. It's PB&J, Velveeta and potato chips.

DH ate that delicacy back in Omaha, NE as a kid! His mom worked a lot, and he had to fix his own lunches. I had never heard of it prior to meeting him.

They also make the McRib but it hasn't wrested the BBQ Ribs crown from any region.

I think wings are something Pittsburgh should be known for even though they technically didn't originate there. Quaker Steak and Lube started in Sharon, PA before Buffalo Wild Wings in Columbus. Quaker Steak and Lube has better regular wings imo. Now these are chain places now of course but back in the day they weren't. Pittsburgh has a lot of places with good wings and places close to Pittsburgh like Drover's Inn in Wellsburg, WV are also known for good wings.

Not going to read everything, this is the right answer. Don't confuse Primanti's with fries on the sandwich or salad. You will find these in far away locals as "Pittsburgh Style"

I only caught some of the show but on tonight's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives he was somewhere (Miss. maybe? somewhere in the South) - anyway they had Pittsburgh Steak Salad and it's one of the best sellers there - according to whatever the hosts' name is - Pittsburgh is known for it.....
