Hi there,
I have been watching a bird for a few days ; he has a next high up in one of our trees, swarms in, adds something to the nest and swarms out again. He has a huge wing span and it is wonderful to see. I keep trying to get a pic, but its hard.

It is wonderful to see this, but I don't know if it is a hawk or eagle.

Put out a Teacup Poodle, a Shih Tzu, and a Yorkie. If it eats the poodle, but not the others, it's a hawk. If it eats the poodle and the Shih Tzu, it's an eagle. If it eats all three, move.

Here is a sample of a nice raptor book:

You can tell them apart by their wings shapes while flying.

Eagles are easy to identify because of the vibrant white heads and yellow beak.

You're probably looking at a hawk, vulture, or osprey

Eagle

Hawk

Vulture (Vultures can have white heads but they're not as vibrantly white and they look hunched over when they are perched in a tree.)

Osprey

Even though your dog is large, keep an eye on it while it's outside. Prey birds can get territorial when they have young in their nest. They can swoop down and attack large animals and people. My sister had one in trees near her house. Every time she walked from her house to her garage they would swoop her. It terrified her.

One more possibility is a falcon.

What color is the bird? Specifically, what color are its tail feathers and does it have a speckled breast?

In other words, does it look anything like this?

If I see an unknown bird and can either remember it well enough or get a good photo, I run through whatbird.com, and I can usually figure out what type of bird it is.

Just worth noting, it is possible (though maybe not likely) that there could be a golden eagle. This type of eagle would have a brown head.
