Pittsburgh homeless people given a reprieve - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Homeless individuals and drifters have long been a part of the neighborhood, even after the rooming houses on Federal and East General Robinson fell to the wrecking ball of redevelopment a dozen years ago when the stadia were built.

We'll see what the city does as far as keeping the homeless in their North Shore community and not running them out on a rail. I can see where under I-279 might be a safety issue, but if not there, where?

Honestly I've never seen a problem with them there. As a person who has never had to build myself up financially from zero I feel that I have no right to make assumptions about why they're there. They tend to keep to and clean up after themselves. Other than the porto-john rental for the city there doesn't seem to be a cost associated with them (and what's the alternative really if not poop everywhere). Our winters prevent their numbers from swelling too much.

I'm sure their presence has its issues. Perhaps someone can provide a different perspective.

And yet there are people who say poor people aren't negatively impacted by development/gentrification.

Do homeless or squatters really count?

They count if they were staying at the rooming houses that were torn down or if they became homeless due to development.

Google gentrification and homelessness. People can become homeless due to gentrification.

Housing isn't a right. I sympathize with them, but claiming them to be a casualty of gentrification is a stretch.

Claiming that gentrification is some great evil is as well. It has its negative qualities of course, but you make it less likely for people to take it seriously when you overtly dramatize them.

The only real victims of gentrification are elderly homeowners or any home owner on a fixed income who can't afford slightly higher taxes or a slightly higher cost of living. Renters can rent elsewhere. With the north side when comparing the gentrification that has occurred with the alternative of the area remaining somewhat blighted the complaints against the practice seem petty.

Again I sympathize with the plight of homeless people or with anyone who is actually negatively effected by gentrification, but not to the extent that I would undermine the wishes of the majority in these communities who want to see their neighborhood improve.
