I'm fairly certain Clark wasn't being dismissive. You have to understand that for someone from a more monolithically East Coast area like Philadelphia, Pittsburgh will seem "Midwestern" by comparison. I immersed myself in the city from day one, and even then, it took me a year or two of living there before I caught on to the fact that Pittsburgh is primarily a Northeast/Mid-Atlantic city, not to mention the fact that its secondary (though certainly quite significant) "Midwestern" attributes are in fact Appalachian.

To reiterate, Pittsburgh really has nothing in common with the Midwest or Cleveland. If anything we can identify with both West Virginia and the East Coast before the Midwest. Kinda wish Pittsburgh was more "Midwest" because people there are wayyyy nicer than both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

PLEASE not this whole midwest vs east coast argument again. Spare this thread. I really think Peduto would go for this, if he's not already thinking about it. Every time I email them, I get a response at warp speed. And they are always very receptive. Maybe just send the link to them through the contact form on Bill Peduto's website, ask if something like this could be considered for Pittsburgh, and see what happens? I've gotten forward motion on a few things by doing that already. Contact People for Peduto | Peduto for Pittsburgh Mayor

Because that's what happens in Philadelphia, invariably, because it's the East Coast.
Actually I always considered the TRUE Philly sandwich a roast pork on a Sarcone's roll with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe (good places to get this is John's Roast Pork in South Philly, Jake's in the Gayborhood, or Tommy DiNik's in Reading Terminal Market) ... the Cheesesteak is an over-rated thing we market to tourists. Most self respecting Philly people avoid places like Pat's and Geno's like the plague. Speaking of the East Coast, there is nothing like a hot kosher pastrami on seeded rye with brown deli mustard ... in New York you go to the 2nd Avenue Deli, or Katz's, or the Carnegie for this. Of course, you can order the sublime pastrami/kosher corned beef on rye with cole slaw and Russian dressing on it (Oy! I'm kvelling!)

By comparing Pittsburgh more with the Mid-West, as opposed to Philly's "North East" associations, I was trying to pay a sincere compliment ... Pittsburgh people strike me as friendlier, tidier, more honest, and more polite than Philadelphians. I see those as admirable Midwestern characteristics.

I picked up on that as a compliment (although I find Clevelanders to be a bit more cold and arrogant than Pittsburghers at times).

Ya know, when people generalize about cities and their people, it always cracks me up. People are people. Philly, you know, where they booed Santa Claus. Two years ago at the Philly-Bucco series I met some of the nicest people who love our City. And we sat for about 2 hours after the game and talked baseball.

There are jerks everywhere...

...and a few on this board.

Wow there are some sensitive people on this board.

It's funny listening to some peoples perceptions of Philadelphia. It's clear they're trapped in the 80s and have either never been here or haven't been here since the 80s. They are completely unaware of the rapid change and gentrification and rebuilding of the city. It's pretty miraculous.

Philly-folk never have anything but praise for the city of Pittsburgh (unless it has to do with sports) and we are always complimenting their city... I don't understand why we get attacked back?

We need to learn to work together as the major anchor cities of PA to fight against Harrisburg for a better business climate and more transportation funding.
