It's that time of year again in Pittsburgh! With the "big storm" approaching, I'd like to see what some of you think about what this season is going to bring to the region in terms of snowfall and temperatures! Accuweather, TWC, as well as our local stations usually reveal their long range winter forecasts in the middle of Fall, but those are historically premature and inaccurate.

As for me, I'm getting the feeling that we're going to have a pretty cold December with a lot of snowfall. I also predict Lake Erie to be mostly frozen over by Christmas or new year's. After that, I think we'll have a major January thaw that lasts well into the month. Right now, I'm about 80-90% sure of what I've just said. Mid-late January through February are still too far out there for me to speculate with any degree of certainty, but if I had to wager a guess I'd say that time period will be very unstable with up and down temperature swings, and everything from rain to ice storms, to the occasional heavy, wet snow that melts rapidly. As for March right now I'm loosely predicting the more traditional "in like a lion, out like a lamb" idea, though I wouldn't be surprised if spring "breaks" a little sooner at the beginning of the month. I don't see a repeat of last March in terms of temperatures or snowfall. Like I said the latter half of the season is tough to pin down, especially March (which is almost wishful thinking). I do have a strong suspicion that at least in the short term (next 6 weeks) it's gonna be on the cold and snowy side. On the bright side, if the lake freezes around the new year, lake effect becomes a non-issue for the remainder of the winter....Usually.

Not exactly true, but not far fetched either. Definitely a grain of truth there. There will be a lot of days mild (40s) and freezing cold (20s). Some snow, some rain. Some days completely dry. Some variety there. But what won't change much is the wall to wall cloudcover on an almost daily basis, regardless of termperature. Gray-mild, gray-cold, gray-snow, gray-rain, gray-no precip, bright gray (aka partly cloudy lol).

After all the beautiful sunny days we've had in November, a little greyness won't hurt. It is winter, after all.

I dunno about predictions, but I know I hope for snow, snow, snow. Today is a good start. It's very pretty out there right now. Even the dude and the man might admit that. And the forecast for Thursday through Saturday is for plenty of sunshine - how can that be?

I predict it will be cold, wet, and gray like it always is. Most will complain, city-data will cheerlead it into a positive, same old same old.

I am predicting that it will be much colder than the summer was, and a little colder than the fall. Snow will occur but not everyday. Sometimes the snow will be deeper than others. There will be some warm days thrown in there, which will be followed by wind and then colder days.

There will be clouds except for the times when there is sun. It will start warming up in March but will still have some cold to get out of the system, which will make people complain about when will spring get here, and what not. Then it will warm up even more into April.
