Carnegie is trending upwards and the business district finally seems to be showing small signs of improvement. The school district isn't bad and crime is fairly low.

Unless you got money to burn, I think it's absolutely insane to buy a house somewhere you've never been. Renting just seems so obvious a solution in your situation... which is why I respect the utter ballsiness of buying a place. Kudos!

I grew up in Ker-NEG-gie (lol) and Glendale which is actually part of Scott Twp, and it's always been a working/middle-class area. Some areas with 1950-60's construction, a lot of areas with late 1800's Victorians that are increasingly restored and very nice. Also some areas that aren't...yet.
As someone else said, the library is a gem and I grew up spending my summer days there. The music hall is a smaller reproduction of the one in NY.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a home there, but not so brave as to buy one sight-unseen. To get an idea of your neighborhood, use google street view. I've used it a few times to visit old haunts.

Carnegie is fine. Yes, avoid Carnegie Towers & the flood zone. Other than that, it's a neat little place.
It's a nice little town of it's own, has a few run down areas, but nothing awful, except the towers (which is where my stolen jeep was recovered).

Since you're not from here--some of Carnegie is Carnegie Boro, some is city of PGH. Some is Carlynton Sch dist, some PGH Public Schools.
It is a short commute to downtown PGH by car or bus.

Are you single? Married with kids? What were you looking for in a neighborhood?

Some of Carnegie is in Scott Township/CV School District as well. Carlynton is one of the smallest school districts in Allegheny County and is looking at the possibility of merging with one of its larger neighbors, so there could be a change for Carnegie borough residents sooner rather than later.

Yes, I'd assume Carlynton will be part of a larger district within the next 20 years or so. For Carnegie, inclusion into Chartiers Valley makes sense. Crafton might make more sense in Montour given its link to Ingram and Thornburg.

It's a great town for commuting to here and there and the traffic is not too atrocious which are two things that would be very important to me if I moved. You have 2 main interstates, lots of other interconnecting roads to use if needed (rte 50, 121, Campbells Run Rd, Idlewood that connects into Crafton, etc.) and you have the west busway to downtown which is quicker than the T that makes 138 stops within a 6 mile ride from the South Hills village mall.

It's about as central as you can get without living in town. I can be in Robinson, downtown, Mt Lebanon, or Bridgeville in 10 minutes and there are numerous ways to avoid traffic.

We're all central to a group of places. LOL Hell, I'm central to Cranberry, Downtown, The East End, McKnight, I-79, the Turnpike, and a bunch of other places. Robinson, Mt. Lebo, and Bridgeville aren't even on my radar as important places to be, just like I'm sure Cranberry and McKnight aren't on yours.

Although I agree with you, being there has easy access to everywhere but east. 79 is a great highway.
