It's unlikely anyone from the Google Generation will know the answer to this question, but possibly your father, uncle or even grandfather will know.

Who was the superintendent (or superintendents) at the Pittsburgh Works in the 1958-1960 era? This was the Second Avenue operation, north side of hot metal bridge and included the blast furnaces and coke ovens at Hazelwood.

i loved that monster - the flames from the smokestack, that large, black, hulking presence.....and up on the hill, youd see the off/on/off/on flickering of the radiant light from the works.

and the soothing sounds (muffled by the hills)....when it closed down, i had insomnia for months and months.

oh, sorry....reminiscing.....

trivia - i have no idea. im going to guess Jack Fleming, WTAE radio/steelers host. he is probably deceased by now.

When I was a kid, I thought the mills were cloud makers, for obvious reasons.

I have no idea who the superintendent was. I'm guessing it was an oldish WASP.

Have no idea who the supt. was.

Old joke from years ago, don't know if it's true: A city 911 dispatcher received a call from a hotel in Oakland on the Blvd. of the Allies to report a huge fire down in the valley. All the tourist could see was an orange glow and a lot of smoke. Realizing that what the out-of-towner was describing was the J&L mill, the dispatcher simply told him, "Sir, this is Pittsburgh."

A photo or two would have given mood to this thread. Below is a link to an image in the University of Pittsburgh's Jones & Laughlin collection. Paste this link in your browser and show your kids what some of us will always remember as the true Steel City.

When I was about 6 years old, i remember staring at the Clairton Coke Works. My aunt had a second story balcony over looking the entire complex. I asked her what was made there. She replied "coke" ..For years I thought coca cola was made there.
