I was watching the Sunday Business Page with Jon Delano this morning. Craig Davis, CEO of visit Pittsburgh, was his guest. Mentioned was the fact that for the fifth straight year Pittsburgh was #1 in it's group in tourism dollars. 2014 was even better than 2013, and 2015 is looking to be a massive year the way things are "lining up" according to Davis. Pittsburgh will be adding 800 more hotel rooms within the next few years. Tourism creates 39,000 jobs in the region and is the fifth largest employer. People used to scoff at the notion of Pittsburgh as a tourist destination. The reality of it all is that Pittsburgh is as an attractive place to visit as it is to live. Medium to large/medium cities. You know, Like Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Milwaukee, etc. Those are all great cities too. I would refrain from sweeping this data under the rug just because we are not #1 when going up against New York, Chicago, or LA. However, if you ask me, for a city of Pittsburgh size we at the very least are competitive in a lot of ways with the big boys if not necessarily as good as them. This is good news. I am surprised by the cynicism.

What's NIT?

I have met Jon Delano twice. A very nice guy who really cares about people and explaining the issues of the day in a way that's accessible. He has an e-newsletter on all things political that he sends out sporadically. I'll see if I can find the info on how to subscribe.

Just curious, did they mention any reasons 2015 will be a huge year for tourism in the area? Are there supposed to be a lot of major conventions visiting then?

If they are fairly sure of that, would make the case for a 1000 room hotel for the convention center.

Quick, where zman? This is surely yet another sign of regional decline and coming collapse.

He's banned.

I'd like to see the list of cities in Pittsburgh's group, if it goes by city size or metro size, if region is taken into account, etc.
