We're due for it, and the pattern we've seen for the past 12 months or so with regard to the jet stream finally seems like it's gonna break. Factor in the very real possibility of El Nino this year, and NOAA may not be too far off the mark.

We'll have cold spells here and there, but NOTHING like last winter. At least that's the one thing most forecasters seem to agree on this year.
Last winter sucked. It lasted forever too.

I'd like the highs to hover around 30 (no freezing rain) and the lows to not go below 20.

Is there a statistically significant effect of El Nino on East Coast weather? I know all about En Ninos and the PNW/CA, but not around here. It's tracking right now to be a minor El Nino at best, but probably need to give it another month or so before the trend is clear. This site is a good summary:

SOI graph and archives

Still very much in neutral territory right now.

We all know that last year was not the norm for Pittsburgh. It wasn't the norm for the entire country.
Yeah. Our heating bills were $250/month - $300/month. Our furnace died, and we spent two days/night shivering with it being 40 degrees in the house until we were able to have it fixed. It was one of the worst winters I can remember, so I'm most certainly NOT looking for an encore. If we have another winter like last winter I'm hedging a bet that many people will want to move South.
