Most of the uproar seems to have happened once the story took off in international media outlets.

I suggest you get over it and stop with the BS rationalizations.
Actually, even that symbol will eventually be used again in its originally intended manner, as over time the atrocities of WW2 will be gradually forgotten. True "Normal-thinking" people don't attach any emotion or meaning to symbols anyway, because then those symbols will have power over them and any others who have bought into it.

Thanks for the "suggestion", but I think you should keep those comments to yourself next time.

Normal people attach all sorts of emotions and meanings to symbols. I'm sure a moment's reflection can think of cases where people attach positive emotions (e.g. respect for the flag, kneeling before the cross) or negative emotions (such as what is under discussion here). The atrocities of WW2 will be gradually forgotten, but that won't be for centuries. Obviously, the Stars and Bars can't even start the process that might make it lose its racist meaning until actual racists stop using it to promote racism.

Some examples of "true 'normal-thinking' people," please.

Normal people aren't frightened by Klan robes, 'cause they're only a symbol, bro.

Here's a test, Mr. Naivete... go visit a Jewish club wearing a swastika. See how well you're received. Then feel free to discuss how it's simply a meaningless symbol and you're wearing it as a fashion statement or whatever and that it should hold no power.

There is stupid and then there is completely clueless.

I hope you don't own anything with a logo. Because that's all logos are. Brands are symbols too.

A firehouse in/around Wyncote, a very Jewish northern Philadelphia suburb, flew a swastika flag (the swastika facing the "peaceful" way) for a shockingly long time. Why they didn't take it down until the late '90s, I cannot say.

I think that is what they are talking about in this story. Not a flag, but actually in the stone. That is relatively common. I can't imagine a government building putting out a flag with a swastika, regardless of which way it pointed.

A bad sign at Glenside Fire Station? A swastika has upset some residents. But supporters note the symbol's honorable pre-Nazi history. - Philly.com

There's also a "swastika house" on Andover Place, where the Hill District meets Oakland:
