My 10 year old son has had a headache for two months now, continually. He's missed two months of school! I couldn't get my general practitioner to do anything, after a month and several visits to the g.p. my *husband* was able to get a referral to a neurologist. The neurologist said: ' Migraine, give him topamax and imitrex when it is worse.' She agreed to order an MRI, and it took 3 more weeks to get that done. We are *still* waiting for the results on that. The topamax and the imitrex aren't helping at all. The next available appointment with the neurologist is FEBRUARY 2009!!!!

No adult would have to put up with a continual headache for two months...does anyone know of a doctor who will take this seriously and actively work on aggresively treating my son?
i am so sorry to hear abt that
Migraine Headache in Children

this article might help u to know better abt ur child condition, i really dont know a doctor by name for pediatric migranes, but UPMC children hospital are more than excellent u can try to reach there and look for a pediatric neurolgist and not an adult neurologist

remember headache in children should be taken more seriously specially if its interfearing with daily activities which is obviouse in ur child's case
1st step: review the results of the MRI
2nd step: educate urself abt the condtion
3rd step: UPMC Children hospital might help u
4th step: after a defintive Diagnosis , educate ur child and other family members abt what should be done

No research to cite, just personal experience.

thats true in part, see the problem with migrane its mutifactorial with some factors evident in some patients more than the others, so there is no universal treatment for every 1, rather a tailored treatment based on each person's risk factors, as long as it works for u , do it , but it doesnt mean it will work for every 1 out there

Thanks for the information. My son has been seen by a pediatric neurologist at UPMC Children's Hospital. She prescribed topamax nightly, and imitrex when the pain gets severe. She seems completely unimpressed by the fact that my son has had an unremittant headache for two months straight. We've had one appointment, and she can't make another appointment for him until January.

We've had his eye glass prescription updated, he's been to the dentist, he's been to an ENT specialist--who ruled out sinus trouble and ear trouble. I've taken him to 4 acupuncture treatments. He had his first appointment with a chiropractor today. They were the first to show any concern, and suggest it isn't right that a 10 year old has a headache for 2 months. They'll work up a theory as to what is going on, and present us with a plan of action on Wednesday.

I'd like to find a neurologist who would be more aggressive in finding something, anything to relieve my son's pain NOW and allow him to go back to school and enjoy life again. He's gone from playing soccer and ultimate frisbee to spending most of his time on the couch, zoning out in front of the TV trying to ignore his headache.

What's a Mom to do?
