I'm looking for a house in the North Allegheny School District and couldn't help but notice that some neighborhoods like Ridge Forest are around 90% Indian vs 10% Asian students in the district as a whole.

1. Any explanation for why Indians would be concentrating in certain neighborhoods?

2. Anything I should know about Indian culture that may make these neighborhoods more or less desirable?

3. Would non-Indians be looked on as an outsider if they move into the neighborhood?

I have some terrific Indian friends and co-workers and I've observed they highly value education which would explain the attraction to the NA school district but not the concentration within certain neighborhoods.

Any thoughts?

1. They like the smell of curry
2. See #1.
3. Not unless you have a problem with #1.

Seriously though. You'd have to find out the dominant caste in Ridge Forest. As long as they are primarily Bhramin, you have nothing to worry about.

This is such a weird post. I don't have anything to add than the possibility generations of Indian families have chosen a certain area based on recommendations by families and friends. I had no idea that NA had many ethnic groups, when I was growing up it was predominantly white kids who went to NA.

Ridge Forest happens to be all new construction with the oldest house 4 years old.

Indians look at School district as #1 criterion while looking for a house.
They have a high preference for new and brand new construction.
In general, we like to congregate- be around other Indian families- because as first genners, we face similar challenges and have similar aspirations.
I don't think you have anything to worry about- most Indians here are very well educated and will not be involved in petty criminal activities. They will be cordial and polite to you but realistically, don't expect to be in their 'inner circle' or get that Diwali party invitation
BTW, FYI, curry is a British invention. And what is Bhramin? The Brahmin caste? LOL.

It all goes back to the ending of the Raj and the Partition. Do you have a copy of Midnight's Children handy?

I actually don't have a copy handy - could you please summarize? I'm not understanding the connection.

In India, you almost always buy a brand new house or you just build a new one on land. The thought is - you are spending your life's earnings on a house- why would you buy something someone else lived in and used? No 'house with character' business for us
We are also not very handy with things. Most Indians here grew up with paying other people to do their plumbing/ carpentry and other household tasks. A new house comes with less work.
