Just back from Cook Forest near Clarion and I80 - some great trails, including a nice overlook of the Clarion River, and only 2 hours from Pittsburgh. I'm sure it is even better with no tornado warnings. Not sure how "Appalachian" it is, but some interesting rural scenery on the drive up.

No disrespect to the PA "Spruce Knob" as it does have a phenomenal view, but a better view? Spruce Knob in WV is one of the most amazing views on this side of the country. It has 270 degrees of views as well.
