Hi there. First let me tell you all how excited I am to find this site. My husband and I are relocating from Chicago to Pittsburgh for a job opportunity he had and prior to us moving into our apartment had never even been to Pittsburgh. (We are renting for a year and then plan on buying a house next spring). With that said, I am hoping for some direction as to growing towns around the Washington County area. His job is in the town of Eighty-Four, so we don't want to go north of the city and I hear taxes in Allegheny county are very high. We're young and while we don't need to be in the middle of all the action of downtown, we don't want to be in such a small down that there isn't anything to do. Are there any areas that have some great main streets of shopping and restaurants and things to do?

Thanks for all your suggestions!

The two largest recommendations to you will be Peter's Township and Canonsburg. Check them out.

Well, I'm going to be settling in DORMONT, which is right along Liberty Avenue (Main N-S drag), and has light-rail & bus service, and even a serviceable and walkable little downtown... Only a couple miles from the downtown area, Dormont seems to be just right for my needs....

That is true! I like good ole Dormont! However, Dormont is in Allegheny County. She specified she wanted Washington County, but these are always more ideas to check out!

Yay! Dormont is a great little neighborhood, I almost moved there, but all the houses I looked at were too big for my needs.

don't give up on Southren Allegheny county. yes taxes are more expensive but it's got more young people and walkable areas etc... as said DORMONT is very nice as well as MTLEBO

As far as Washington county...since you don't have kids...I'd skip Peters Township. There is no "downtown area" it's great for the suburban family but I really feel you can find a better place...when you have kids move to Peters!

so that leaves the city of Little Washington has some bad parts but also has some very neat older neighobrhoods.
Cannonsburg..has a neat downtown mainstreet with some shops etc... has some nice areas and has some NOT so nice areas.

Personaly, if I was in your place I'd look into Dormont/MtLebo.

Thumbs up Mt Lebo

We moved here from Charlotte NC in 2000. I work in the Robinson/Airport area and have school age kids. Our highest priorities were good schools and not having to cross a river or go through a tunnel to get to work. Coworkers cautioned me to stay out of Allegheny county due to taxes so we spent most of our time searching in Beaver county. Washington county has beautiful rural areas if country living is your preference.

Our best choices for schools (as recommended by school teacher relatives who have friends in Pittsburgh who are also teachers) were Blackhawk (Beaver county), Mt Lebanon and Upper St Clair(Allegheny county). Ultimately we chose Mt Lebanon because we found the house we wanted here.

We have discovered how much we like living in a community that is very walkable, close to downtown Pittsburgh, rich in distinctive architecture and affordable. We can walk to a grocery store and restaurants, drive into Pittsburgh for a Pirates game in 12 minutes (or take the T if traffic is too heavy), or just walk the neighborhood sidewalks and enjoy the tree lined streets and beautiful homes with their stone walls, stained glass windows and tile or slate roofs. We are very happy with the school system. A plus is that the kids can usually walk to/from school. Grade school kids can even come home for lunch. These are also all good qualities to have when thinking about resale value of your home.

Good luck with your decision. Establish your priorities and then visit each community and see how you like them.
