There are many people that work in tech that are more than a little annoyed that all the job centers tend to be in expensive areas, SF, Silicon Valley, Seattle, LA, NYC, Northern VA, Boston, etc. They should really look at cities that have room to expand. There are cities like Detroit, or Cleveland that were much higher population in the past and so have room to house more people without skyrocketing cost of living. I imagine with a decent set of nearby universities and small office for Apple, Uber and Google, and admittedly a significant amount of vacant formerly residential lots, Pittsburgh might be able to make the case that they could be a good recruiting location, without the backlash of skyrocketing cost of living like SF, further expansion in Seattle, LA, or NYC.
Detroit would be a great reclamation project. Amazon could push that city back over the top.

Columbus actually has another major strike against it: no international airport.

If international airport is a requirement, or even frequent domestic service with many destinations, Pittsburgh will get crapped on by Detroit. It seems like Detroit has quite a few things working in its favor. In PA, wouldn't Philly make more sense than Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh is really tech friendly, and because PIT used to be a hub, our airport is very scalable.

Yes, it does.
Oops. I did not know they had direct international flights.

Ann Arbor, U of Michigan is not that close, but maybe close enough to be considered a feeder. Like CMU for Pittsburgh, UW for Seattle and Stanford and Berkeley for Silicon Valley and SF.

UPenn is not really considered as good a feeder, I would imagine. Plus in Philly it would run into office competition with Comcast if they chose center city. Also imagine it doesn't have all the empty land zoned residential that could built up.

Seems like that development on the Civic Arena site would be perfect for Amazon.

PC Magazine seems to think Pittsburgh would be a good match:

It would be very cool to get that tower and all the jobs that go with it, either Amazon or no Amazon.

While I think lots of these tech websites have some great suggestions of cities, using various metrics, I think many are leaving out one big factor, which could be the biggest factor of them all, the current General Assemblies of these states.

While Pittsburgh or XYZ might make great sense to land Amazon HQ2, the reality is the current General Assembly in states like Pennsylvania and even North Carolina will never pony up the incentive package necessary for this project.

They are talking 50,000 jobs. Wow. That would make up for the steel industry. Instantly make whatever city they choose a 2nd Silicon Valley. CMU had better step up, and PA, give whatever tax breaks they want.
