Just so you know, I am definitely reading the above in Gollum's voice, and appending the phrase, " tricksy hobbitses," to the end.

The trump presidency has been expensive indeed. Fellow fiscal conservatives where are you?

-Is there a reasonable path to citizenship for the immigrants?

I'm certainly not in favor of "open borders" or abolishing "ICE," but I think there is a plurality of Americans in favor of common sense immigration policy, which is undermined from demagoguery on the Far Right.
Able bodied people aren’t deserving of free stuff just because they choose to take the easier way out and expect others that chose a different path to pay their way. However, anyone that thinks they are, should certainly fund them and even open their homes to them.

Don’t recall anyone arguing immigration. They simply need to pay their way, but again, feel free to fund them, and even open your house up to them if you feel they’re entitled to free stuff.

Just in terms of "self-interest, rightly understood" -- what if, on the one hand, it is cheaper to provide a welfare payment to an able-bodied "shirker," rather than to fund the police to the degree necessary to protect you and yours from all the able-bodied "shirkers" who don't want to work, but who do want to rob/steal? Perhaps the rational choice is still to fund welfare payments to the able-bodied "shirker," to get the best societal outcome for the lowest price?

Love the rationalization for free stuff. Feel free to fund the “shirkers” and even let them into your home. That would be an even better outcome for the lowest price.

Now, my wife is able-bodied and doesn't work, and I have let her into my home, does that count?

That’s up to you, if you consider her a “shirker”.

Nah, she's a excellent partner (and I'm not saying that just because she standing over my shoulder)!
