my goodness.

take a look on a map - that creek winds every which way, passing a lot of well-populated communities. its not one of the cleaner creeks/streams in our part of the state.

I read about it. Seems it is unknown at this time. When things are "unknown", it is best to wait and not think you know what is going on. Many times you are wrong.

Hope whatever it is, it can be fixed. Makes me sad of course.

Preaching to the choir on that. All I did was speculate but I emphasized “we shall see” and “Cannot wait to see what comes out of the investigation” statement.

Some updates. Should have results of the water samples by July 30th.

“During its continued investigation into the fish killed in Chartiers Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has expanded the affected area and is estimating “thousands of fish” were killed.

Originally, the affected area was a 7-mile stretch of the creek beginning at about the Valley Brook Country Club in Peters. Monday, the DEP announced that the affected area is now about 10 miles long.

When the DEP responded to the incident on Friday it collected samples of the water for testing and expects to have those results back on July 30, DEP spokesperson Lauren Fraley said Monday.”

If we were gathering up the usual suspects would it be:

1. acid mine run-off?
2. fracking fluid dumped into stream?
3. Keyser Söze?

Report out.

https://www.post-gazette.com/news/en...s/202108040143

After running tests on water samples collected at Chartiers Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has determined that it wasn’t a herbicide that killed thousands of fish, but a fungicide.

Tests on initial sampling, done on July 15, came back “non-detect” for herbicides, but positive for fungicide, said DEP spokesperson Lauren Fraley.

During their initial investigation, the DEP said it had suspected some type of pesticide as the reason for what they deemed a “substantial” fish kill.

“DEP does not currently have evidence that any fungicide remains in Chartiers Creek in the area of the spill and found no additional pollutants from the July 14 incident to indicate a further impact on aquatic life,” Ms. Fraley said.

The DEP also took samples of the water during the week of July 19 to July 26 and are awaiting those results to determine recovery of the area or if there are any lasting impacts.

During a follow-up investigation that same week, officials saw that fish and aquatic life had begun to repopulate the area.

At this time, the DEP won’t comment on potential source or sources of the contamination, or if any enforcement actions will be taken, because it is an open compliance matter, Ms. Fraley said.

The fish kill was estimated to have killed thousands of fish, according to the DEP. It was reported to have occurred on July 15, but the DEP was not made aware of it until July 16.

“The time between the initial event … and it being reported to DEP on Thursday afternoon has been a significant impediment to DEP’s investigation,” Ms. Fraley said.
