Hi all,

Which town do the tech folks (with families) tend to gravitate? Do you prefer to send your kids to public or private schools?

We're interesting in moving to Pitts, we've met great people all over Allegheny county so we're not quite sure where to settle down. Any ideas or advice is appreciated! We're open to moving out of the county too, more space and lower taxes for the win.

Not a techie, but my general impression is those with kids tend to live in the city, in Squirrel Hill/Shadyside. Many go the private school route, but the neighborhood K-8 public school is well regarded (though opinions are more mixed on the high school, with a lot of people going the magnet route).

Outside the city I'd say you get the highest concentration in Fox Chapel SD. It's close to the city - particularly Aspinwall, where you can take the bus into work if you so desire. Outside of that, more broadly speaking the North Hills are more upscale/less insular feeling than the other suburban areas.

I would recommend Fox Chapel School District because they have had 3d printers so long ago and have the funds for keeping on top of everything. Stay out of the city. If you don't want FC, look at North Allegheny, Hampton and then Quaker Valley. To keep up, you need funds. City schools are struggling to get kids to school due to no one wants to drive the kids on buses. That should tell you quite a bit.

Fox Chapel is more diverse than some districts as well with a lot of international students due the the proximity to Oakland and teaching hospitals. Like the hospitals that preformed the first liver transplant.

People will want you to live in the city, but do you want to experiment, or go to a proven district?

Thanks for the ideas, we really liked Quaker Valley area, Fox Chapel had some wicked hills! Not to mention super pricey.
Aspinwall and Squirrel Hill/Shadyside are a little too close to the action, we were hoping for a little bit more space, suburban running into rural.

One thing nice about the Pittsburgh metro area, for us, is you don't have to go far to get a change of scenery. We stayed in Cranberry Township and the drive in was a breeze.

We only had time to explore North of Pitts, but how are the areas South of Pitts? The roads don't seem to be as well laid out and I would guess more prone to traffic. Mt Lebanon has a more urban/suburban feel but looks really nice. The High School there blew us away when looking at it online.
What about Bethel Park?

well if you are a 'techie' like me - someone who beta tested IBMs telework software 3 decades ago, you can live anywhere you want and make it work. Heck, I was in the woods for 20 years with broadband before I bought this house. Real woods. A place where city dwellers burst into tears of fright at the wildlife.

That being said, all of us in the same or similar industry wont touch allegheny county with a 10 foot....we are all in westmoreland and if your kid is 'handicapped' with a 500 IQ you are in the Norwin district

I've never heard of older tech bros all living in the same area. Is that a thing?

No, but the people with better pay and families in the city tend to live in the same East End neighborhoods and more of those people are now working in technology.

i would doubt a majority with kids choose to live in the city. what are you basing this on?
