There's no such thing as "culturally Northeastern," "culturally Midwestern," or "culturally Western." They are just Census geographies.
For now.

I think you're overstating the solidarity in Southern culture and understating the links in Midwestern culture. The Midwestern culture is the projected as the stereotypical Meat & Potatoes "normal" American. A love of pretty much all mainline sports, northern/western European descent, traditional homesteading, Tom Sawyer, hunting, etc. These traits aren't all that strongly shared all together with the general culture of the other regions. Yes there's variations between Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Wichita and Fargo, but there's also a lot of differences between Atlanta, Miami, Richmond, Dallas, New Orleans, Knoxville and Jackson.

Take a look at other divisions of the US beside the Census Bureau. The Midwest is one of the more consistently kept together regions. Other than the Dakotas, they're the Standard Federal Regions V and VII. Federal Court of Appeals? 6, 7 & 8, with Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee instead of Kansas. Bureau of Economic Analysis? Plains and Great Lakes (only Census Bureau region that fits cleanly). PADD? gains OK, KY and TN. National Park Service? Just add Arkansas. As much as these regions aren't meant to define culture, they aren't just clumped together solely due to proximity.

Maybe I get these kinds of ideas from Stranger Things...which takes place in Indiana but clearly isn't shot there.

Or from this one film called Super 8. It was filmed in/around Weirton but takes place in Montgomery County Ohio (which isn't even part of Appalachia)

I also think that sentiment is a bit stereotypical but it goes both ways. There is very much a typical Northern culture to the south just as you look at the south as typical southern culture.

I lived in the south and most people I work with/interact are "southern". They are southern to us and yes they consider themselves "southern" but in a general way we are "northern". People in the south don't really call themselves southern, they are from Arkansas or LA, West Texas, or the Bayou.

I was very often referred to as a typical northern. Yankee is also much more than a team.

East coast is a part of the region. Pittsburgh isn't necessarily east coast, but it is northeastern.
