Both are a possibility. Any opinions?

Yeah, it really depends on what you're looking for in a city. No 2 choices are going to be the same for everyone...it's whatever works for you.

My opinion is I hate SC and especially Columbia. Redneck south at its worst.

If you're looking for gay tolerant communities in Pittsburgh, like you indicated on other threads you started, you might want to consider Shady Side in Pittsburgh.

I moved from Pittsburgh to Charleston a year ago after 43 years. Couldn't be happier. Great weather, lots of history, laidback way of life. Columbia is a very cool city - you need to check it out.

When I was looking at grad schools, it came down to either Duquesne or USC. I visited both and got a gut feeling about Pittsburgh--that I could live in Pittsburgh, but Columbia was too Southern for this midwesterner. Eight years later, I'm still in Pittsburgh.

you bet. I was in Charleston nad I have to say I've never seen a more segregated place. It's, perhaps, the most overrated place I've been to. People were slow (upstairs). the weather was disgustingly hot.

I have to say that I find Pittsburgh just as racist as the South. Also, what SC cities have is a large black middle class, something sorely lacking in Pittsburgh, at least.

The summers can be hot; the rest of the year, gorgeous. And I'm sure that by referring to the locals as slow really didn't win you any points.
