I just started working at Alcoa (On north shore between 7th and 9th) and am looking for a house with my wife. I have been told that rt. 28 is bad in the morning, but there are some houses in O'Hara/Fox Chapel that we really like. I get to work at 8:30pm and leave at 5pm.

Anyone have a sense for the commute time?

ps - the houses we are looking at are off Kittanning Pike, about 1 mile north of Rt. 28

Thanks for your help!

I come in 28 and it isn't always a mess in the morning. My guess is that it would be less than 30 minutes since you work on the North Shore. The way home is usually a little worse. However, Alcoa is pretty close to 28 so you will hit 28 pretty early making the commute a little better. Also, there is a detour in place right now which would make your commute a little longer on the way home since you and everyone else has to get off in Sharpsburg.

This is my neck of the woods. What streets are you looking at? Let me know if you have any questions.

I live off of Kittanning Pike and work Downtown. The back ups usually occur at the 31st Street Bridge both inbound and outbound. Outbound it backs up to the Heinz Plant at rush hour. Figure thirty minutes inbound and thirty-five to forty outbound. If there is an accident or a disabled vehicle or dreaded construction, all bets are off. Just to let know, there will be a major widening and improvement project coming in about a year or so for Route 28. Many building have been and are currently being razed at the base of the hillside. Monumental traffic jams are promised once this project starts. People will be told to leave an hour or so earlier than normal. It is a project that needs to be done. It is a major artery serving those who live in the upper and lower Allegheny Valley and the eastern portions of the North Hills.

It's an easy commute from Fox Chapel into downtown---especially the North Shore. With the worst rush hour traffic, it's only 15 minutes from the exit. So, of course, the closer you live near route 28 the better. If you can have flex time and start earlier than other people, your commute could be as little as 7 minutes on route 28. There is construction right now, but it will be over in a few months. Traffic will flow faster than ever because they've added a extra lane at the Route 8 interchange.

I love Fox Chapel - I grew up there in the 60's. I recently re-located back to the Pittsburgh area and went back to the Fox Chapel area to take a look. The trees are 30 years older and the area is shady'er!
