A couple of people and I are looking into the idea of organizing a public dance event in the western portion of Westmoreland County. We're looking into the Greensburg area, but we may consider any of the neighboring towns such as Irwin or Jeannette.

The kind of event that we would like to hold is a teenage dance, something for the 13 to 18-year-old age group who would otherwise have nowhere else to go on the weekends. We estimate having around 500 people at this event, and there would be a cover charge of $5-10 per person to cover for expenses. Food and soft drinks would also be available for an additional charge.

We're looking into some of the fire halls in the area, but we're also considering the Event Center building behind Westmoreland Mall, which offers more space. Does anyone know of any other places? What about DJ services? Concessionaires? Do we need any licenses to hold a public event?

I applaud your efforts. Teenagers have such limited options. I don't know Westmoreland County well enough to give specifics. I just want to toss out a suggestion. Consider restaurants that are closed on Sunday nights. When I was a teen, there was a restaurant in the North Hills that turned into an under 21 dance club one weekend night. It was cheesy, but we have fun. Another idea is to see if you can find an old roller skating rink building.

Hopes, I appreciate the input. I like the restaurant idea. Something is always better than nothing. There's a restaurant in Jeannette that uses its basement as a venue for local bands, the only downside to it is that it's small. We don't have any roller skating rinks in the area but we do have an indoor ice rink in Greensburg. A dance party on the ice rink would definitely be unique in my opinion. There's also vendor areas within the building, that would be a big plus.

Rent a country club? In Penn Hills, Alcoma has gone public and they have a Book an Event page on their site. In this economy I imagine a lot of clubs are barely getting by and golf season is over. Alcoma Golf Course I'm only familar with Greensburg CC and Lincoln Hills CC is near the Irwin turnpike exit. I'm sure there are others around.
