PITTSBURGH, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has begun sending cease-and-desist letters to other communities that have copied its popular Light Up Night.

The organization held its first Light Up Night in 1960, although it waited until 2003 to register the name for its Christmas tree-lighting festival.

I generally like the Downtown Partnership's work, but this is ridiculous--even as a legal matter. See here for commentary by Pitt law prof Mike Madison:

Well, I'm not a lawyer, but I could actually understand that! I do think it's silly. Denver has long had a "Parade of Lights" the first weekend in Dec, then all these suburban cities started doing the same thing. I always wondered how they got away with it, I guess it's by calling their parade "Louisville Parade of Lights", etc. Other communities could get around this "Light Up Night" thing the same way, e.g. "Mt. Lebanon Light up Night", according to that Pitt prof.

It's an obvious choice of words for the event, anywhere that people speak English, and should never have been granted a trademark.
