If you don't allow it to be. We normally take nice vacations away from the city, but last August I took a week off and just stayed around here. The only time my car left it's garage was to take it out for a cruise at night. I can walk to get any groceries I need at multiple locations, dine out, and get all of the running and biking enjoyment I could ever dream of in Frick Park. Couldn't be more self sufficient.

All those amenities are dependent in part on the greater city being there. So the fact that you as the end-user didn't have to leave the area doesn't mean that you were truly living a self-sufficient lifestyle.

I'm not from anywhere near Pittsburgh but have either visited western PA or encountered enough of the Yinzer diaspora in the Harrisburg area to at least sort of understand Pittsburghese. In my view Pittsburgh is not and should not try to be like every other place. Turning Pittsburgh into Northern Virginia in the name of supposed progress would be an absolute shame. Pride in your roots and in your neighborhood should be a good thing and perhaps people of all stripes DO want to move to Pittsburgh to be part of it. Certainly seems that way after reading this sub-forum for a few weeks.

I know, my example doesn't fit your typical socio economic multi faceted worldy cultural type of discussion you usually engage in, but I can't think of any other needs than shopping for groceries (i can walk to multiple locations for that) dinning out (same) utilizing the park for fitness, exercise, and relaxation purposes, and being able to baord public transportation for an other needs. That's what I call self sufficient, and this has nothing to do with Yinzers, except for a true Yinzer is lazy and drives everywhere.

Do you grow all your own food scottpriester or does it get just appear magically in the store?
Or maybe a truck driver (yinzer) delivered it, and then someone unloaded the truck, stocked the shelves, cleaned the store, ran the cash register Who built all those cool east end buildings? Construction workers (yinzers?) I wonder who maintains Frick Park by cutting the grass, removing the trash etc? Next time you get on the bus take a good look at the driver ( probably a lazy yinzer who drives everywhere). And you're calling yinzers dumb? Wake up and smell the coffee Scottie!

Yes they are the backbones of this region. If it wasn't for them who would you get to do all the jobs that they do?

You can call it whatever you like, but it doesn't change the fact that you wouldn't be able to live that lifestyle if the rest of the city didn't exist.

Yeah, the idea that making use of all these things can be called "self-sufficient" is very much a Shoemaker's Elves mindset. In the non-fairy-tale world, if you want shoes you need to find an actual shoemaker.
