According to the latest Census Bureau Estimates for 2009, the ethnic composition of the United States looks something like this...
65.1% Non-hispanic white
15.8% Hispanic
12.3% Non-hispanic Black
4.6% Asian
1% Native Alaska or Native American
1.7% 2 or more races
.2% Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
(Does not total 100% because hispanics can be more than one race for the figures I selected) (the rest of the ethnic groups are for people claiming one race) (Not pinpoint accurate but a good general idea
These figures are based on the estimated 307,006,550 people residing in the US.
I am not trying to start a debate. I am just wondering what people's take is on the accuracy of these estimates. Any surprises?
Living in a place with a lot of diverse cultures and races the "white" estimate seems to high.... but then I visit the midwest and don't see any hispanics at all.... so we shouldn't let our perceptions guide us.
I am SO over the "hispanic" thing though. A German descent Argentine and an Amerindian Mexican have ZERO in common except a language and maybe a love for Telenovellas!
The category that should be more IMO is the multiracial. Many hispanics should actually be put into that category (Mexican Mestizos, Mulatto Dominicans, etc.).

It's interesting I think
A real rise about hispanics and asians !
Really...how can any of us know the accuracy of estimates of 300 million people when each of us has seen less than 1 percent of that total in our lifetime...
I know in crime statistics they include Arabs and some Hispanics as white so the white % may actually be higher than what it truly is. Sad but true.
If an Arab is not white, then is a Greek or Italian not white? Are Israelis not white? Is it only blue eyed blondes that are white? I don't completely understand your thinking.

Greek and Italians are white. Israeli's are not they are Jewish. I am not blue eyed or blonde but I am white. My point is when the FBI puts crime statistics together they include Arabs and Hispanics as White. Arabs are not white most Hispanics are not white either. Some are but most aren't.
