I'm really not sure what the point of this OP is. Is the picture supposed to prove that slavery existed in the U.S. and that it included children? Well, we already know that. Is it supposed to document the abusive treatment of slave children? Well, apart from the fact that the children pictured are dressed in rags, it really doesn't do that. I'll bet there were plenty of poor white kids living in similarly deplorable circumstances, minus the slavery aspect of course. So what's the point again?
What's the point of having memorials for historical events?
It's called remembering. I guess you'd rather have this deleted this from our history but whether you want it or not, it is there and this picture serves as troubling reminder.
In regards to that document of "Negoes for Sale"....blacks sure seemed to be described as "hard working" when they wanted to sell them....any other time they were all lazy and shiftless.
On June 21, 1877, twenty men linked to the secret organization called the “Molly Maguires” were hanged in the Carbon and Schuylkill county prisons for first degree murder. These men were sentenced to death by judges who were heavily influenced by powerful mining companies and the biased testimony of a spy, James McParlan. Today, these hangings have been recognized as unjustified, and in 1979 the state of Pennsylvania gave John Kehoe, the alleged king of the Molly Maguires, a full state pardon over a hundred years after his death. June 21, 1877, the sad day when twenty members of the Molly Maguires were hanged, has since been referred by the state of Pennsylvania as “Black Thursday.”
When is someone going to speak out against the atrocities happening in the Mother Land of Africa? There is still slavery going on there along with genocide. Instead of dredging up the past in the USA, how about looking at the present and what is going on in your so-called home countries?
Thats sad. What do you want to bet that picture ends up on some tea party members shirt with some cute little quote about Obama.
I guess you need to re-read your history.
The Civil War was not about slavery. It was about states rights and the concern of the increasing power of the federal government and northern states relative to southern states.
In a BRILLIANT POLITICAL MOVE, Lincoln declared the emancipation proclamation in an effort to change the complexion of the war from a political dispute into a moral and ethical one of slavery. This move prevented England from supporting the south and probably was THE FACTOR that allowed the north to win. With continued supply of arms and possible intervention with troops, the north would have lost.
No one can justify slavery. No one can celebrate its past. However, to characterize the Civil War as one initiated on the issue of slavery is quite incorrect. This is from the decendent of Union soldiers.
While the picture itself is very haunting and a sad reminder of our past, I guess I'm missing the point and/or controversy in this post?
This is yet another attempt by Indentured Servant to spread more White guilt, go ahead and ask him for a solution and see what happens. I have a picture of my gg grandfather in his civil war uniform fighting for freedom for the slaves, so what. Does this change anything, no.

good question. but who wants to go to africa for a pity party when they can have one right here in the USA?
Yeah sure, slavery is about to be signed into law in 2010.
No...that is not likely with a black president . However, anyone who has studied history knows that is is simply repeating cycles. Ultimately its an ECONOMIC issue at root. Oppression always is. The truth is that we are on the verge of an economic collapse....global. If or when that happens.....the deep ugliness in people will return as they get more and more desperate. The worst offenders will be the people used to having the most. They cycle can very easily repeat itself.

Also remember that during the Revolutionary war that England offered freedom to slaves who would join their side and fight against the rebels.
One can argue that offering freedom to slaves was a war tactic in a strategy to maintain power.
