Who knew you could buy an illegal switchblade or gravity knife at The Home Depot in the Flatiron District and Paragon Sports in Gramercy Park?
The two national chain stores -- along with five other Manhattan retailers -- have agreed to stop selling hunting and utility knives that snap open with the push of a button or flick of a wrist, and which, therefore, are illegal, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced yesterday.
The retailers have also agreed to turn over all of their illegal knife inventory and their profits from the past four years of selling such knives, Vance said -- nearly $1.9 million so far -- to stave off prosecution. is this a shakedown?
Those kind of knives are actually not legal here, to the best of my knowledge anyway. It's not something I've spent a lot of time on when studying the weapons laws here.
People have been arrested in the city for possessing those types of knives. Again, I cannot say what happened to them, if anything, beyond the arrest itself. And I'm not talking about the usual suspects. People who just didn't know that they weren't supposed to have those items.
The blade of choice for thugs is the machetee now anyway . What a terrible nation this has become in just a couple decades . The most dangerous gangs are not even from here .

Let's ban guns also........
I don't think this is stupid, at all but I do think it is a prelude to going after guns of all kinds and I don't like that especially in a Democrat run state. I guess the reason is obvious.

This is definitely NOT a prelude to going after guns here. That ship sailed here many moons ago.
Incidentally, what happens in New York State doesn't apply to New York City where gun laws are concerned.

Switchblades have been illegal here for nearly fifty years that I remember. I brought one back home from Mexico with me when I was a kid and had a lovely time playing with it until the spring finally broke. I still have it.
It is incumbent upon the merchant to make certain that the goods he sells are legal. There is nothing in the least wrong with LE stepping in when they overstep their bounds. that's why LEOs get paid.
Also be aware that some items are legal in some places and not so in others. In Montana you might get a different interperetation of what will pass and what will not.
I just came back from Atlantic City where you can buy hookahs, bongs, glass pipes, and any other sort of "tobacco accessory" you desire on the Boardwalk at any one of a hundred shops. If you go to Panama City, Fl, you see the same thing. New York is full of paraphernalia.
Set up a shop like that in a lot of places and you will be invited to remove the merchandise from display or be heavily fined.
If you have a problem with law enforcement, take it up with the courts.
Looks like NYC is trying to control NYC. Very commendable.
No, they strongarmed the stores into not carrying the knives at all.
