According to current federal regulation, hospitals must treat all patients who come to the hospital with a situation requiring emergency treatment, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. With tens of millions of uninsured Americans, illegal immigrants, and foreign visitors, hospitals give away roughly $41 billion a year of uncompensated care. This greatly increases the cost of services to paying, uninsured customers and partially accounts for high insurance premiums.

Should hospitals be required to do this, or should the law be struck from the books?

Yes, of course they should. We are physicians, not bankers.

Obama has killed many hosptials, however, by the burden of illegal immigrants. Perhaps we should restrict healthcare to our own citizens and allow other nations to take care of thier citizens.

are you suggesting that some one should just die if they cant afford medical treatment? $41 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other things that cause medical services costs to go up, and by the same token insurance rates. if we were to eliminate frivolous lawsuits, we could cut malpractice insurance rates, which costs more than treating uninsured and indigent people. if we allowed insurance companies to sell health insurance across state lines, and eliminated government mandates, you would also see insurance rates drop. if we eliminated the vast majority of redundant paperwork that doctors offices and hospitals and other medical care givers have to fill out, health care costs would drop dramatically. if we could get people off government supplied health care, rates would go down.

also if we could pick what we wanted insurance to pay for, rates would go down. for instance if we wanted the insurance company to cover catastrophic health care, lab tests, and medications, rates would be lower than if we had insurance pay for everything. also why should a 60 year old female pay for maturnity coverage? or abortion coverage?

Yes, treat all emergencies. Follow up is done with their regular physician either here in the US, or in their native country.

I believe all Americans should be treated. If someone is found out to be illegal and they come back, I feel they should be denied, even if they are going to die. The illegals are notorious for using the kidney dialysis machines in the hospital over and over costing tens of millions.

We should always treat emergencies in every case.

If someone is illegal then send the bill to their country of origin.
