because by wanting obama to be just black and not black and white follows the one drop rule, and takes this country back to jim crow
I can remember when Obama first decided to run, many were saying he wasn't black enough, the color mixture would hurt him on both sides. You are completely right..
Obama is a mixture of black and white. Michael Steele, most likely, is a similar mix. What does the one drop rule have to do with this?
And how does pointing this out take anyone back to Jim Crow? Jim Crow is not that far in our past, btw.
Lets be honest here, you believe in the one drop rule, and that has been seen on the boards many of times, so it would be very hard to get you to fully accept it.
Obama is a product of a black man and white woman. he is equally white and black. According to the one drop rule, this would mean that he is classified as only black, and the white is dropped off his classification all together. If the one drop rule is not being used, he would be classified as both equally.
As for the similar mix, without DNA no one really knows. Since Steele was adopted as an infant, the ethnic background of his parents is unknown. But yes more then likely he has some white mixed in there somewhere, as majority of black americans do. But having some white in there does not mean that they are equally black/white mixture.
Yes Jim Crow is not that far in our past, but does that mean that we shouldnt move on from there? Does that mean we should still be willing to accept the ideologies from this time frame? The government used the belief of the one drop rule to regulate voting, and no the believing in the one drop rule today doesnt result in the same end result, but, it is still holding on to the ideology of an era that we should strive to move past.
Why not be willing to step up and say, we are no longer going to accept this belief that was used as a form of segregation? Let people be proud to announce and accept all parts of their heritage and not only one, because that is what they were told to do in the not so distant past

Get things right. I think the one drop rule is stupid, and I think classifying people by race is stupid, but I know that the one drop rule determines how people are regarded in this society, and that those of African ancestry are regarded a certain way.

If you believe in racial classifications as well. However, most "blacks" are mixed. Some "blacks" are less "black" than is Obama himself. Not because of a convenient African-Euro parentage, but because of centuries of mixture.

Well, we all know that this is not the case. So why even belabor this point?

No, some are more "white" than "black," some more "black" than "white."

I don't think the government has any interest whatsoever in the one drop rule, except to assure that those on the wrong side of it get their votes counted just as fairly as are the votes of those who care to maintain the white power structure.

So I should be as proud to be German, Scottish, English, Irish, Swiss, Danish, French and Spanish as I am African?
Let's see how far that takes me...................
