When any criminal leaves the prison, they are required to be confined in handcuffs and shackles. That is the law. If women want to be treated as equals they need to stop whining about when something doesn't go THEIR WAY.

Hypocrites, double standards. That's what feminism is all about.

the treatment she received was unwarranted.
This is where we differ.

I believe that if you're in jail, you should expect to not be treated well. Thats why you're in jail.

If you want to argue about non violent offenders being in jail, please, start another thread.

I don't care what she did, she is in jail, period. non-violent isn't always something that they didn't need to be locked up for either. Al Capone was arrested for tax fraud, but everyone knew he was a killer, as well. Did he not need to be locked up?

These ladies aren't innocent of doing nothing. Concurrent with the laws and punishment in their state and country, they are receiving the punishment set forth. If you disagree with those laws, thats a different issue all together.

Men are not required to be handcuffed while giving birth.

Not feeling a lot of sympathy here. It was their choice that landed them in their positions. They didn't have to get pregnant or break the law. The only ones I feel sorry for are the babies who by no fault of their own will be separated from their mothers until they are released.

Tell you what, when men routinely push watermelons through their penises, then we'll talk about what is and is not preferential treatment.

But she was still considered a prisoner and had to be treated as one while giving birth.

Someone mentioned walking during labor to help speed it up: letting anyone who is incarcerated "walk" around a hospital room wouldn't be too smart anyway - every L&D room I've been in has drawers & a closet filled with medical supplies. Plus it takes the onus off the nurses/doctors/technicians to have to worry about their safety.

problem is that, according to the article, the COPS THEMSELVES may have broken the laws by keeping them shackled. you can't rail against the women for committing non-violent crimes yet let cops pass for potential breaking a law that can possibly endanger the well-being of a baby being born

the women are criminals, I get that. they don't deserve a ton of sympathy. but in ALL of these cases, the health and well being of newborns could have been jeopardized if a serious complication had arisen while the mothers were shackled. the babies did nothing to have their births compromised by cops callously breaking rules/laws

Prisoners are required to be handcuffed when they are off the prison grounds. End of sentence. It matters not ONE IOTA, WHY they are off the prison grounds. Rules are rules and they apply to EVERYONE. Black, white, hispanic, young, old, male and female. Regardless of their medical condition.

Rules are rules and whining isn't going to change them (I hope).

uh that is not their policy. Their policy is to allow women to be off shackles to give birth while in labor on the advice of the doctor. The point is that the prison guards were NOT following policy, and in some cases.

Tell me what woman in labor who has been escorted to the hospital to give birth, tied up to seveal machines that monitor heart beat, blood pressure, while she has her legs spread open will just up and run, in a room full of at least 5 other doctors and nurses?

The woman giving birth is no thread to at least 7 humans who will be in that room and outside the room
