"Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I...instead of berthing the vessel in Nantucket, where the senator summers with the missus, Teresa Heinz. Isabel’s hailing port is listed as “Newport” on her stern."

Sen. John Kerry skips town on sails tax - BostonHerald.com

The Massachusetts newspaper says that saves him something in the neighborhood of $437,500 in sales tax.

Yikes. Remind me not to park my yacht in Massachusetts.

Spread the wealth in Massachusetts, Senator.

Ah, the advantages of living in the land of small states. I can't exactly park my car in Nevada to avoid paying CA's outrageous registration fees.

A good example of how our rich officials sham on their responsibilities as Americans to pay their fair share. Too many will say how smart he is for screwing Massachusetts and saving money. If you can afford those luxuries, pay for it.

Us not-so-rich people do our best to avoid taxes, too. When I used to live in a "sales-tax" state, we would drive almost 100 miles to shop in a state where there was no sales tax!
Now that I live in a state that has an income tax, I do my best to find legal deductions to minimize my tax bill!
No, it ain't just "the rich" that try to avoid taxes!

Another case of "Do as I say, not as I do."

Whoop de do... I'd have done the same exact thing given those circumstances.

Taxation is worse then theft. It is theft with the full backing of the weapons of the state.

Evading thieves is not immoral, it is good sense.

I'm not a fan of John Kerry by any means but it sounds like a logical decision on his part. Don't we all try to save money in one way or another? The rich are not immune to going bankrupt as we've seen recently so in my eyes, it's a smart move to save nearly $500K by simply moving his yacht to a different state.

The point of the original post isn't John Kerry parking his boat in another state. It's hypocrisy and the whole idea of what's good for you, doesn't apply to me.

So basically what happened is that Sen. Kerry and his wife offshored some assets?

On another track-$400+K in sales tax? How much was the boat?
